Welcome to the
International Acupuncture Association of Physical Therapists
Who Are We?
IAAPT is an international network of Physical Therapy associations and individuals interested in the practice of Acupuncture.
It was founded in 1991 and became a sub-group of the World Confederation of Physical Therapists in 1999.
It was formed by a core group of physiotherapists from five countries, where physiotherapists had been practicing acupuncture from the early 1980's - Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sweden and United Kingdom.
In 1999 in Yokohama IAAPT was recognized by the WCPT as the special interest group to represent all physiotherapists internationally. Membership has grown to include 6 further countries, Argentina, Hong Kong, Canada, Zimbabwe Ireland Greece, and there are individual members in a further 6 countries.
It consists of academics and clinicians from 11 member countries. We promote the dissemination of ideas by means of a journal which is produced three times a year.
Every four years a general meeting of the group is held , at which officers are appointed and accounts approved.(These meetings coincide with WCPT Congress)
The organisation encourages a broad approach to the practice of acupuncture, being aware that members need to conform to the rules and regulations which govern registration in their own countries
Standards of practice for basic safety have been established and accepted by member countries. IAAPT is now continuing to work towards an accepted international basic training.
